Trailblazer Series: Psyche Southwell of Economy of Style

We are SO excited to feature Psyche Southwell, the Creator and Editor of Economy of Style, for this month’s Trailblazer interview! Psyche has such an infectious personality and we are always inspired by her love for bold colors and prints. We had such an amazing time collaborating with her for our new Spring Collection and can’t wait for you all to see the photos. Check out her interview below and be sure to head over to Economy of Style to learn more about Psyche, her trendy style and useful tips for shopping on a budget!

What is something you wish someone had told you about starting a company?

My business emerged organically from a hobby. I wish I had been encouraged sooner to explore the possibility of turning my personal interests into professional pursuits.

What advice would you give to a woman who is considering starting her own business?

Be a good researcher and evaluator of your field.

What’s the best career advice you ever received?

Build a community of like-minded women that can help you shape and advance your ideas.

What do you love about running your own business?

Every day, I get to see how my visions get materialized.

Who inspires you as a business woman?

Solange Knowles has served as a critical style muse for me. I’ve also been inspired by how she’s successfully transformed her creative interests into lucrative businesses.

How do you stay motivated through difficult times?

I stay immersed in my community of interest through expansive reading and in-person networking.

What’s been most rewarding?

Being recognized and honored by leaders in my field, such as editors of major magazines, has been quite encouraging.

Who were you before you started your business?

I worked in academia as an educator and researcher.

If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?

I would probably still be working in higher education.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

I see my business embracing expanded opportunities to spread the message that net style is not determined by net worth.

Fill in the blank:

  1. Favorite Quote: “Anyway, I think style is more important than political ideologies.” Ralph Ellison
  2. The best lesson I ever learned: There is a range of possibilities for getting the work done.
  3. The bravest thing I’ve ever done: I turned my hobby into a professional pursuit.
  4. My greatest fear: That trepidation would prevent me from taking chances.
  5. My top 3 guilty pleasures: Reality television, kettle corn popcorn, and aged rum

Spring 2017 Trend Report: Our Top Five

Our Spring Collection is abound with many of this season's hottest trends, plucked from the runway. We have interpreted these trends into easy to wear pieces that are sure to be in heavy rotation in your wardrobe this Spring. Here are a few of our faves:
1. Tassels: they are here to stay...and better than ever!  From shoulder skimming silk tassel earrings in jewel tones, to colorful mini tassels, and beaded and horsehair tassels headlining statement necklaces, we have you covered!

2. Statement Earrings:  last night's Oscars Red Carpet was abound with gigantic statement earrings and naked necks, taking this already huge trend to a whole new level. Charlize Theron looked amazing in a minimalist metallic gown, a ponytail, and 60 carat diamond Chopard earrings. Incredible. Our Spring Collection is full of fun statement earrings sure to complete every ensemble.

3. Pastel Palettes and Florals:  As Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada sarcastically put it: "Florals? For Spring? Ground-breaking."  We see florals and pastels every Spring. But this year is different. Florals are covering everything from Oscar gowns to bomber jackets, and the sherbert pastel color palette is everywhere. And pastels are flattering on everyone, so it's no surprise they are a perennial favorite.

4. Geometric Shapes:  geometrics have been evolving as a jewelry trend over the last few seasons. We are loving the clean shapes and patterns in our Spring Collection combined with textured finishes and mixed metals. Our geometric pieces were our "go-to" at our Spring photo shoot when creating layered looks.

5. Marigold:  shades of yellow were a big runway trend, and we are loving our take on this trend. The warm Marigold color for Spring and early Summer feels so refreshing, and is surprisingly flattering on all skin tones.

We are just a week away from our Spring Collection launch! Can't wait for you to see the entire collection!

Behind the Scenes: The Spring Collection

I always feel this way before the launch of each new season, but our Spring Collection really is our best collection yet. We discovered new artists whose aesthetic and craftsmanship is a perfect fit for our brand, and we focused on creating a diverse collection that plays heavily on texture, mixed metals, and beautifully delicate lines and shapes built for layering.  The end result is a rich tapestry of natural stones, geometric shapes, and hand-crafted textures that together create the perfect balance.
As with every season, we started our Spring concepts with an inspiration board and a color palette:
I was lucky enough to travel to India in January to put the finishing touches on the Spring line. India is one of my absolute favorite places on the planet. It's a huge source of inspiration for me: the colors, the smells, the history, the architecture, the food. And of course: the jewelry.
We spent hours and hours in the crazy Delhi traffic for days traveling from artist to artist. We are lucky to have such an amazingly diverse group of artists as partners. Everyone has their specialty and distinctiveness, from textured finishes to high quality semi-precious stones in interesting settings, to beadwork. I am always blown away by the amount of work that goes into crafting each and every one of our pieces. The jewelry making process is a painstaking, multi-step process with so much precision and attention to detail required.  It's amazing to sit and watch these artists at work. So much talent and love goes into each and every Joya piece.

And this trip was a special one because we are working on some exciting new categories for our Summer Collection. We traveled to Jaipur for a few days to work with several textile makers. It was terrific to escape the smog and traffic of Delhi for a few days to spend time in one of the most beautiful cities in India.  Steeped in tradition and beautifully colorful, Jaipur is known for its textiles. I have always adored the traditional block print designs that are native to Jaipur. I love everything about the process: the hand-carving of the blocks, the precision with which the talented artisans stamp the fabrics, and the unique color combinations and layered patterns you can create with every piece. I cannot wait to show you what we've been working on for Summer. Stay tuned...

I have never been very good at keeping secrets, and it's absolutely killing me that I have to wait to share all of the amazing projects we are working on and the crazy good finds from the India trip. I kept telling my husband over the phone as I was bubbling over with excitement and a bit of exhaustion every night, "This is a game-changing trip."  And I'm so excited to share with you the first few sneak peeks from that trip and our Spring Collection. I hope you love the collection as much as we do!

Top 5 Must Have Winter Jewelry Trends

1. Layered pearls and matte beads: They aren't just for the ladies who lunch, these pearl studs have the perfect cool girl edge. On the runway, it's all about layering pearls or matte beads, we love to get the whole look with 1 necklace, our Wear Anywhere Necklace. We are dying for pearls these days! Find even more here!

2. On the Fringe: Last seasons tassels were bright and fun, but we prefer the more sophisticated spin on the tassel trend with a darker palette and metallic accents for a more adult spin. Layer one over your favorite winter sweater or have it peak out under your scarf and blazer. We love tassels so much, but this Gobi Tassel is one of our favorites. Want more? Check out our gorgeous tassel pieces here!

3. Stack em Up!

One of our girls always has a stack of bracelets on, and every day she does a little bit of a different spin on it. It is never exactly the same, and that is what is so great about this trend, you can personalize it. Check out our latest post on Arm Candy to get more ideas how to create your stack.

4. Earthly Elements: Whether it's a raw cut stones, or a beautiful agate, like in the Highlands Necklace elements from nature are right on trend. It's all about the imperfections and handcrafted nature that make these pieces so beautiful and unique.

5. Bejeweled: It's not the holidays without lots of glam, and of course diamonds. Oh, do we love our diamonds. Perfectly imperfect, we love this rough cut pave in both the ring and the earrings. Both understated and glam, you can wear them with your fav stretch black pants or your little black dress. Best of all this won't break the bank. Shop our Heirloom Collection here

Wear It Four Ways: Bohemian Striped Scarf!

Scarves just might be our favorite accessory. There are tons of ways to tie them, they never go out of style and no matter how you are feeling, scarves always look great! We teamed up with Stacy, from Paisley Boutique, to style our new Bohemian Striped Scarf. All four of our favorites are stylish and easy to execute. Check it out and let us know which is your favorite!!
1. Utilize the cordovan buttons to create a versatile poncho! We can’t get enough of this classic silhouette.  Wear with the buttons down the front or along the side. We love it paired with jeans, boots and a cute felt hat for the ultimate Fall look.
2. Accentuate your waist with a belt! First, fold the scarf and drape around your neck. Next, add a belt at your natural waist. Voila! This slimming look instantly elongates your body.
3. Knot it up! This style is classic and easy. Drape the scarf around your neck, allow one side to fall over your shoulder, tie a knot and tuck in the corners.
4. Drape over one shoulder! This chic look is effortless and can be an easy way to dress up a simple top. We love this thin belt with a little embellishment—it’s perfect to fasten the scarf!
Which will you try?! If you have any additional ideas, send them our way! We are always looking for inspiration and love hearing from you.  Shop the new Bohemian Striped scarf here!

Arm Party

For the last decade we all have heard the term "Arm Party". Little did we know what it really meant then and over time how it would develop. I think it is safe to say we all know it means "stacking your wrist with bracelets".

Your arm party can have 10 plus guests or it can be a small party of 2. It all depends on what tickles your fancy that day or evening. Your arm party can be a mix of many different materials from big to delicate beads, metals, fabric, semi precious stones and everything else in between.

An arm party can be one of the easier ways to accessorize your outfit. It can take your look to a new level with just a few bracelets. Let's take a look at a couple different looks with bracelets from Collections by Joya.

These three bracelets share the same hues that look amazing together and also can be worn as singles for a more delicate look. From top down the Arvada Bracelet-Gray, Arvada Bracelet-Celadon, Hammered Leaf Indigo Bracelet.

This is a stunning example of using different styles and textures.  Even by just taking one bracelet away it could change the look completely.  From left to right is Tulum Pearl Bangle Bracelet,  Gala Pearl Bracelet, Shades of Gray Bracelet, Perfect Layers Bracelet- Gray.
